Release: Southeast Louisiana Chapter 9.16.08

American Red Cross shelters in Southeast Louisiana

Update as of 11 a.m., Sept. 16, 2008

As residents put their lives and homes back together after Hurricane Gustav and the effects of Hurricane Ike, the American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter is transitioning shelters daily, based on needs.

Today, shelters are open in:

  • Lafourche: Larose Civic Center (307 E. 5th St., Cut Off, La.)
  • Terrebonne: Devon Keller Memorial Center (5575 Bayou Black Drive, Gibson, La.)
  • Terrebonne: Dumas Recreation Center (Tunnel Blvd. at Barataria Ave., Houma, La.)
  • Terrebonne: Schriever gymnasium (102 Kelsi Drive, Schriever, La.)

Anyone evacuating to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each member of the family:

  • Prescription and emergency medications
  • Foods and water
  • Identification and important personal documents
  • Change of clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items
  • Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys
  • Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled

With the high winds of Hurricane Ike past, two Red Cross kitchens have resumed operations, preparing meals for Red Cross shelters and for delivery to areas affected by flooding and continued power outages.

Today, Red Cross emergency response vehicles loaded with hot food, water and snacks will be headed to:

  • Jefferson: Barataria and Lafitte / LaRose toward Crown Point
  • Terrebonne: Town Hall Mall, 605 Barrow, Houma, La
  • Terrebonne: High water barricades on highways 315, 57, 56, 24, and 665
