Red Cross Closes Evacuation Shelters in Covington County
Last resident checks out of Red Cross shelter in Andalusia Wednesday morning
ANDALUSIA, Ala. (September 3, 2008) – As of noon Wednesday, all residents from Louisiana had checked out of the shelter in Andalusia and begun their journey back to their homes in Louisiana.
“We had a great experience this time with sheltering in Covington County,” said Jeffery Biggs. “But once residents were given the all clear that their home parish was open, they were ready to head back to see what damages they had.”
As for the shelter operation itself, Biggs said the entire operation could not have been possible without the help of several people.
“I cannot begin to thank individually each and every person who, business, and organization who stepped up and made our operation run as smoothly as possible,” said Jeffery Biggs, executive director of the Covington County Chapter. “There was great community participation – from our volunteers, the Department of Human Resources, LBW faculty and staff, local businesses, the Sasser family, Andalusia and Opp Police Department, the Covington County Sheriff’s Posse – so many people. The operation in Covington County was truly a unique experience for everyone, and we’re grateful for the assistance we received.”
